Description

SENSORY ACTIVITIES ON THE ROAD
Travelling an area from north to south feels like a challenge, an adventure, a journey to discover a treasure trove of architectural and artistic heritage, landscapes, and communities. A roller coaster of experiences is ready to amaze the visitors’ senses, amusingly pairing them with the saints depicted in magnificent Gothic frescoes. Will you know how to recognise them? Lucia (eyes/sight), Agata (breasts/touch), Apollonia (teeth/taste), Rocco (dog/smell), Antonio Abate (bell/hearing).

Schedule

Day 1

Tip: focus on hearing.

Arrive in Cassine and visit the Convent and the Church of San Francesco, built between 1291 and 1327. The Church was commissioned by Roberto d’Angiò, King of Naples in memory of his brother, the Franciscan Bishop San Louis of Toulouse, who had abdicated in his favour. San Francesco, with a basilica floor plan and three naves, is one of the few significant examples of Lombard Gothic architecture in Piedmont. At the centre of the Chapter Room is a crowded Crucifixion with figures of Saints. On the northern wall and on the opposite side, in a continuous narrative, are Stories of the Magi, the Adoration of the Child in the arms of the Virgin seated on a throne and the Saints, dear to Franciscan and local worship.
Followed by a moment of relaxation and wellbeing: Floating Touch wellness route, holistic treatment which joins Sound Massage and Relaxing Massage with Oils and Essences and works on the energy channels by acting on the psychological, emotional, spiritual, and physical components.
Arrive in Acqui Terme, dinner at leisure and overnight in hotel /B&B.
For campervan owners we suggest the equipped campervan area in Zona bagni in Acqui Terme - €16.

Day 2

Tip: test your sense of smell.

After breakfast, transfer to Roccaverano and visit the ancient parish Church of San Giovanni Battista, located at the foot of the hill on which the town stands. The single nave interior is covered by the largest cycle of frescoes of the 15th century local school in the province of Asti.
Roccaverano is also one of the production centres of Roccaverano DOP, a typical soft cheese made 100% from goat milk and produced only in these areas (10 municipalities in the province of Asti and 9 in the province of Alessandria) according to strict regulations.
In the centre of the village, you will take part in the School of Robiola, a workshop to discover the DOP with visit to one of the dairies that produce this excellent cheese.
Lunch at leisure. In the afternoon, visit Cortemilia, town of the Langhe and capital of the tonda gentile IGP hazelnut of Piemonte. The town hosts the National Hazelnut Fair each year (last week in August). In a nearby agriturismo, besides the hazelnut, you will discover all the local products and all the farm animals. Dinner and overnight in Roccaverano.
The Roccaverano/Cortemilia/Roccaverano route can be completed by a beautiful ring tour by e-bike.
For campervanners, we suggest the municipal parking area in Roccaverano - €5.

Day 3

Tip: taste as much as you can.

The journey to discover Valle Bormida continues in Levice.
One of the most important historical buildings is the delightful and well-preserved 14th century Church of San Rocco, built in Langa stone, composed by a single rectangular environment and a semicircular apse. The church, which is visible as soon you reach the town, creates an intriguing contrast with the surrounding buildings and lush vegetation. The late-Gothic frescoes that cover the interior of the apse date to the early 16th century and were commissioned by the Marquis Raffaello Del Carretto.
In the area, visit a family-run farm specialising in breeding grass-fed goats and the production of organic honey. It is impossible not to fall in love with their tome of raw milk obtained by natural lactic acid fermentation served with their honey. A virtuous example of recovery and return to the rural traditions for ecological and sustainable agriculture.
Arrive in Mombarcaro and visit the Church of San Rocco with the frescoes, unique in Langhe, representing the seven deadly sins.
Followed by aperitivo at sunset, dinner at leisure and overnight in Monesiglio.
For campervanners, we suggest the Parking Area in Mombarcaro - €8.

Day 4

Tip: capture every detail with the eyes.

Monesiglio Visit the Church of Santa Maria dell’Acqua Dolce, also known as “Madonna di S. Biagio.” Santa Maria dell’Acqua Dolce dates to the 12th century and was a baptismal church. The three apses and hanging arches, perfectly semicircular, run along the high part of the left side. Inside, you can admire the fine frescoes of the central apse, dating to the 12th century, depicting a majestic Christ Pantocrator surrounded by symbols of the four evangelists. On the right side, a 15th century fresco with Madonna and Child between San Giovanni Battista and Sant’ Antonio Abate.

Stop-off in the small Museum of Langa, home of the writer Maria Tarditi. Born in Monesiglio and elementary school teacher, her writings recapture the spirit of these lands and the nostalgia of past times: the stories of grandmothers by the fire, the hard rural life, the witches and the animals of the forest, the songs of the silk women but also memories of war and rebirth.

Light lunch at the Spinning mill and visit the Silk Museum located in the structure of the historical spinning mill of Monesiglio: the entrance is in the shape of a cocoon and the songs of the female workers, known as «filer», accompany visitors on the tour. Slides and descriptive panels on the cultivation of the mulberry, on silkworm breeding, ancient machinery and a plastic model are all available to the visitors.
In the afternoon, stop off in Saliceto to visit the Church of S. Martino in Lignera San Martino. It is a medieval chapel situated in the village of Lignera, a hamlet of Saliceto, built in 1100 by the Benedictine Monks in sandstone, with a square floor plan and gabled façade. The church features frescoes on the walls of the presbytery and apse. The richness of the details, the abundance of figures and the extraordinary colour games contribute to making this church a small artistic gem.
Transfer to Millesimo, dinner and overnight in relais.
For campervanners, we suggest the Carcare Parking Area in Vispa - free of charge.

Day 5

Tip: “you need touch” to do a lot of things!

After breakfast, we suggest a visit to the Glass Art Museum in Altare which is home to a collection of exhibits which bear witness to the ancient art of glasswork in the municipality of Altare, dating to the 11th century. Followed by a scenic route as far as Bardineto. Visit the Church of San Nicolao which can be reached from Provincial Road 52 by Colle dello Scravaiòn, climbing the trail which rises steeply to the left, immediately after the bridge over the Rio San Giovanni and which also takes to the Fons Salutis of San Nicolò from where the purist water flows.
The current appearance of the church is the result of various structural modifications through the centuries. Specifically, we can recognise three main construction phases: Early Medieval, Romanesque, Late Medieval. If the church is closed, it is strongly recommended to peek at the beautiful frescoes (perhaps by Antonio da Monteregale) through a window!
The itinerary continues to Alassio, in Liguria, for the experience of the lunch with fishermen at a fish farm, where fishing stories will be served directly on the plate!

For campervan owners, the riviera offers plenty of campsites or agricamping to meet every need.
